About the Herbalist

Hello! My name is Kelley Brown. I am currently a student in the Health & Wellness program at the University of California, San Diego with the goal of earning my National Board Certification (NBC-HWC) in 2026. I have studied under Juliet Blankespoor of the Chestnut School of Herbal Medicine with over 1,200 hours of herbal immersion. I’m also a certified yoga teacher (RYT200), Core Strength Vinyasa Yoga / Yoga Shred certified, and an Access Bars/Access Consciousness practitioner. I would like to express a deep gratitude for my many teachers on this path, a few being: Mariah Slingerland, my favorite Spiritual-Life-Corporate-Energy Wellness Expert, without whom Weeds & Seeds quite literally would not exist, Jim McDonald of LearningHerbs, and Lisa Ganora of Herbal Constituents and the Elderberry School. Also, my mom—the O.G. naturalist in my life who was teaching us about nutrition, chemical toxins, muscle testing and consciousness accessing techniques since as long as I can remember.

I consider myself a lifelong learner with an endless curiosity for the world within and around me. I’m someone who finds joy in quiet moments—sipping coffee in the morning, sitting under trees, or taking a road trip. I love snarky humor, a unique foodie experience, live music you stumble on by accident, and bingeing audiobooks and podcasts—particularly on women’s health and history. Most days I’m juggling curiosity and calm with the chaos of corporate life while raising a teenager. If there’s any time leftover, you will find me blissing out in a sound bath or savoring a bit of solitude with my cats.

My path to wellness started like most practitioners in the industry—as an attempt to heal myself. But it wasn’t like I woke up sick one morning and had a lightbulb moment. It was a slow burn of dysfunction, which, looking back, triggered plenty of warning signals I either ignored or didn’t know how to recognize at the time. My first blatant symptom manifested as a seemingly incurable rash on my neck. Eventually, after years cycling through the medical system with every prescription cream, antibiotic, steroid, biopsy and lab test available, including one doctor sending out my case photos to every Dermatologist in her network, I was told, “We don’t know what is causing this. Hopefully it will go away on its own.” After everything I had gone through by that point, including many occasions in tears not wanting to leave my own home, that was the moment my first, tiny spark of intuition came online. I asked, “Is it possible this is a result of something going on internally?” and was confidently told, “No.” and was sent home with no other suggestions or next steps.

“I strive to share the beauty and science of herbalism in a way that is accessible, inspiring AND GROUNDED IN RESPECT FOR THE eARTH AND ANCIENT TRADITIONS.”

After that experience, thankfully I eventually found myself in a Functional Medicine office talking for the first time about nutrition, lifestyle, holistic remedies and, most importantly, I began to follow and trust and strengthen my own intuition. Through all the personal work I have done since then, I have been able to unravel many of my deeply embedded patterns and struggles with anxiety, people pleasing, insecurity, poor stress management, a disconnected spirit and a seriously dysregulated nervous system, all of which had become the unstable foundation for a lifestyle of unhealthy coping mechanisms that left me depleted, lost, overwhelmed and in severe burnout. It has been a non-linear process, one that continues for life, and one that I am eternally grateful for as it set me on my path toward wellbeing and personal peace.

Now, as an herbalist with a deep appreciation for the healing power of nature, my mission is to help you reclaim your own innate ability to heal, with the wisdom of plants enriching, supporting, nourishing and guiding the process. I strive to share the beauty and science of herbalism in a way that is accessible, inspiring and grounded in respect for both the Earth and ancient traditions.

I look forward to learning from you, too.

FAQ’s

  • You may be asking yourself, why do herbalists love tea so much? Out of all the holistic remedies available to us these days, what does tea offer that others don’t? My quick answer to this is: because you are literally ingesting nature. In fact, when you drink a cup of infused herbal tea you are ingesting nature’s extracted plant constituents which are full of chemical compounds that can provide the human body with immense support and benefits. Consider there are many ways to ‘ingest nature’ and many menstruum available for extracting the constituents of plants. You could use alcohol or glycerin as commonly seen with tinctures, you could use fire (literally burn the herb) to combust and inhale the compounds, or you could simply eat the plant and allow your ever-wise digestive system to do the extraction work. But, clean water as a menstruum for herbal extraction, in my humble opinion, is the most energetically neutral option of those mentioned above. In other words, it’s the most gentle, while still being targeted, option and there is nothing else in it to come between you and your nature-medicine.

Plus, the profound act of drinking tea can become a beautiful ritual or meditation in your life, potentially providing many mind-body-spirit benefits as well. For that part, it’s all about your intention and your frequency. That’s where your role comes in.

  • Firstly, a disclaimer that I cannot prescribe anything as I am an herbalist, not a doctor. All content shared online and in person by Weeds & Seeds is purely for educational purposes only. Please consult your physician prior to starting any herbal protocol. Contraindications between herbs and medications do exist, and it is vitally important to review any new substance being introduced with a medical professional who understands your unique conditions and circumstances.

That being said, there are hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of years’ worth of experiential data indicating herbs can help support many of the imbalances humans might experience within their body. There is a famous quote attributed to Rudolf Steiner, “For every human illness, somewhere in the world there exists a plant that is the cure.” These days we have to be careful with the word ‘cure’ (What even is a cure anyway? Are we ever really cured or is this just a word to represent a narrow a lack of presence or undetectability of something we perceive as ‘bad’?), but you get the point. The history of human interaction and depth of our relationship with plants is vast. It is one of the few characteristics that crosses every single culture known to exist on our planet.

All the plants we work with at Weeds & Seeds are generally considered very safe and gentle and, thanks to advancements in research, now have a plethora of scientific studies backing up their efficacy. This information is freely available on the internet nowadays and I encourage you to do your own research (check your sources—PubMed Central is a great open access one), not only on herbs but for all ingredients you come into contact with in the course of daily life.

It’s important to understand that supplementing your nutrition with herbs is just that; it’s a supplementation, an addition, the icing on top of your chocolate wellness cake. It is not a cure-all like we’ve been conditioned by the medical complex to believe many prescriptions and over-the-counter medications can offer. Herbal medicine is just one of the many available holistic strategies one might choose to employ to support a particular health goal. The very first step anyone should take is to identify and address potential improvement areas from your main pillars of health (for example—optimizing nutrition, sleep, daily movement, etc.). But, the beauty of herbs is they are a wonderfully nutritive and a powerful yet entry-level option that nearly everyone can incorporate right now into their wellness journey, even whilst you continually work to improve other health goals.

  • You may have heard of them referred to as the core pillars of health or perhaps described as spokes on a wheel of wellness. What we’re referring to here are the general categories that make up the core foundation of human health & wellness. These are: physical health, mental health, emotional health, as well as spiritual, financial, environmental, vocational, and the health of your connections (socially) and personal creativity.

It is my belief that all the holistic healing modalities out there—whether its herbal medicine, acupuncture, massage and body work, sound therapy, somatic therapy, reiki and energy medicine, yoga, meditation, traditional talk therapy, nature immersion, plant medicine journeys, functional lab testing, grounding, journaling, circadian rhythm regulation, etc.—all are excellent support tools we humans in the 21st century have at our disposal to help us strengthen, regulate, optimize and balance the spokes of our wellness wheel. And, to be clear, the goal is to strengthen, not to aim for a constant state of perfection. As humans by nature we are always in flux, and so therefore is our energy, our vitality, our hormones and our overall health. Perfectionism is a symptom of a dysregulated nervous system, and we are so done with that in 2025, baby girl.

  • 100% of the herbs in our herbal tea blends are USDA Organic, with many of them carrying further designations such as Earth Kosher and Non-GMO Project Verified. Additional designations vary by herb type and origin. To read more about the sourcing of our herbs, please visit the Mountain Rose Herbs Sustainability page.

  • The shelf life of tea & herbs varies greatly depending on how you store it and how many volatile oils exist in the plant post-drying process. You might see tea in the grocery store expire anywhere from 6 months to 3 years. This is not because dried herbs will ever ‘go bad’ per se, but because they can lose their aroma and flavor over time, which is directly correlated to their medicinal value and nutritional benefits. Let me repeat that one more time because it’s that interesting and important: the prevalence and type of volatile oils of a dried plant equates to its medicinal and nutritional value. Or, in other less-science-y terms: the smell, the taste and the color ARE the medicine.

Additionally, one of the biggest reasons we argue our tea is so much better than store-bought is because those teas can sit on grocery store shelves for months before they ever get to you. Unless you harvested and dried the herb yourself, you can’t know how long the process took before that tea bag wound up in your steaming mug.

At Weeds & Seeds, we’re in the business of education and sustainability, so rather than put an arbitrary date on our products that means nothing to our customers, we make this very simple. Assuming you have stored the bag out of direct sunlight and it has not been exposed to any outside moisture, follow these directions— Step 1: Open the bag and smell your tea. Step 2: Does it still smell delicious? Congratulations, your tea is good to drink.

  • At this time, because we are currently considered a cottage food brand in California, unfortunately we are not permitted to ship across state lines. One way around this issue is if you would like to book a virtual herbal consultation, we can then ship your tea bags as part of the service. Shipping costs may be an additional fee that is not included. We hope to one day outgrow the cottage food designation and greatly appreciate your support in the meantime!

  • Because all our products are made to order and often are personalized specifically for you, we do not offer refunds. That being said, if you are unhappy with any purchase, please reach out to us via the Contact Us page or email. We promise to do everything we can to make it right.
